The triliteral root nūn zāy ʿayn (ن ز ع) occurs 20 times in the Quran, in five derived forms:

  • 10 times as the form I verb nazaʿa (نَزَعَ)
  • once as the form III verb yunāziʿu (يُنَٰزِعُ)
  • seven times as the form VI verb tanāzaʿu (تَنَٰزَعُ)
  • once as the noun nazzāʿat (نَزَّاعَة)
  • once as the active participle nāziʿāt (نَّٰزِعَٰت)

Verb (form I) - to take way, to remove, to withdraw

(3:26:9) watanziʿuand You take away تُؤْتِي الْمُلْكَ مَنْ تَشَاءُ وَتَنْزِعُ الْمُلْكَ مِمَّنْ تَشَاءُ
(7:27:11) yanziʿustripping يَنْزِعُ عَنْهُمَا لِبَاسَهُمَا لِيُرِيَهُمَا سَوْآتِهِمَا
(7:43:1) wanazaʿnāAnd We will remove وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِي صُدُورِهِمْ مِنْ غِلٍّ تَجْرِي مِنْ تَحْتِهِمُ الْأَنْهَارُ
(7:108:1) wanazaʿaAnd he drew out وَنَزَعَ يَدَهُ فَإِذَا هِيَ بَيْضَاءُ لِلنَّاظِرِينَ
(11:9:7) nazaʿnāhāWe withdraw it وَلَئِنْ أَذَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ مِنَّا رَحْمَةً ثُمَّ نَزَعْنَاهَا مِنْهُ إِنَّهُ لَيَئُوسٌ كَفُورٌ
(15:47:1) wanazaʿnāAnd We (will) remove وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِي صُدُورِهِمْ مِنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَانًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُتَقَابِلِينَ
(19:69:2) lananziʿannasurely, We will drag out ثُمَّ لَنَنْزِعَنَّ مِنْ كُلِّ شِيعَةٍ أَيُّهُمْ أَشَدُّ عَلَى الرَّحْمَٰنِ عِتِيًّا
(26:33:1) wanazaʿaAnd he drew out وَنَزَعَ يَدَهُ فَإِذَا هِيَ بَيْضَاءُ لِلنَّاظِرِينَ
(28:75:1) wanazaʿnāAnd We will draw forth وَنَزَعْنَا مِنْ كُلِّ أُمَّةٍ شَهِيدًا فَقُلْنَا هَاتُوا بُرْهَانَكُمْ
(54:20:1) tanziʿuPlucking out تَنْزِعُ النَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ مُنْقَعِرٍ

Verb (form III) - to dispute

(22:67:8) yunāziʿunnakaSo let them not dispute with you فَلَا يُنَازِعُنَّكَ فِي الْأَمْرِ وَادْعُ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ

Verb (form VI) - to dispute, to disagree

(3:152:11) watanāzaʿtumand you fell into dispute حَتَّىٰ إِذَا فَشِلْتُمْ وَتَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ وَعَصَيْتُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا أَرَاكُمْ مَا تُحِبُّونَ
(4:59:12) tanāzaʿtumyou disagree فَإِنْ تَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي شَيْءٍ فَرُدُّوهُ إِلَى اللَّهِ وَالرَّسُولِ
(8:43:11) walatanāzaʿtumand surely you would have disputed وَلَوْ أَرَاكَهُمْ كَثِيرًا لَفَشِلْتُمْ وَلَتَنَازَعْتُمْ فِي الْأَمْرِ
(8:46:5) tanāzaʿūdispute وَأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلَا تَنَازَعُوا فَتَفْشَلُوا
(18:21:15) yatanāzaʿūnathey disputed وَأَنَّ السَّاعَةَ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهَا إِذْ يَتَنَازَعُونَ بَيْنَهُمْ أَمْرَهُمْ
(20:62:1) fatanāzaʿūThen they disputed فَتَنَازَعُوا أَمْرَهُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ وَأَسَرُّوا النَّجْوَىٰ
(52:23:1) yatanāzaʿūnaThey will pass to one another يَتَنَازَعُونَ فِيهَا كَأْسًا لَا لَغْوٌ فِيهَا وَلَا تَأْثِيمٌ

(70:16:1) nazzāʿatanA remover نَزَّاعَةً لِلشَّوَىٰ
