Quran Dictionary - ط و ي


The triliteral root ṭā wāw yā (ط و ي) occurs five times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb naṭwī (نَطْوِى)
  • twice as the noun ṭuwan (طُوًى)
  • once as the noun ṭa (طَىّ)
  • once as the passive participle maṭwiyyāt (مَطْوِيَّٰت)

Verb (form I) - to fold

(21:104:2) naṭwīWe will fold يَوْمَ نَطْوِي السَّمَاءَ كَطَيِّ السِّجِلِّ لِلْكُتُبِ


(20:12:9) ṭuwan(of) Tuwa إِنِّي أَنَا رَبُّكَ فَاخْلَعْ نَعْلَيْكَ إِنَّكَ بِالْوَادِ الْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى
(79:16:6) ṭuwan(of) Tuwa إِذْ نَادَاهُ رَبُّهُ بِالْوَادِ الْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى


(21:104:4) kaṭayyilike (the) folding يَوْمَ نَطْوِي السَّمَاءَ كَطَيِّ السِّجِلِّ لِلْكُتُبِ

Passive participle

(39:67:12) maṭwiyyātun(will be) folded وَالسَّمَاوَاتُ مَطْوِيَّاتٌ بِيَمِينِهِ
