Quran Dictionary - ط و ل

The triliteral root ṭā wāw lām (ط و ل) occurs 10 times in the Quran, in five derived forms:

  • three times as the form I verb ṭāla (طَالَ)
  • once as the form VI verb taṭāwala (تَطَاوَلَ)
  • once as the noun ṭūl (طُول)
  • three times as the noun ṭawl (طَوْل)
  • twice as the adjective ṭawīl (طَوِيل)

Verb (form I) - to prolong, to grow long

(20:86:14) afaṭālaThen, did seem long أَفَطَالَ عَلَيْكُمُ الْعَهْدُ أَمْ أَرَدْتُمْ أَنْ يَحِلَّ عَلَيْكُمْ غَضَبٌ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ
(21:44:6) ṭālagrew long بَلْ مَتَّعْنَا هَٰؤُلَاءِ وَآبَاءَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ طَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعُمُرُ
(57:16:21) faṭāla(and) was prolonged فَطَالَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْأَمَدُ فَقَسَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ

Verb (form VI) - to prolong

(28:45:4) fataṭāwalaand prolonged وَلَٰكِنَّا أَنْشَأْنَا قُرُونًا فَتَطَاوَلَ عَلَيْهِمُ الْعُمُرُ
