The triliteral root ʿayn kāf fā (ع ك ف) occurs nine times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb yaʿkufu (يَعْكُفُ)
  • seven times as the active participle ʿākif (عَاكِف)
  • once as the passive participle maʿkūf (مَعْكُوف)

Verb (form I) - to devote

(7:138:8) yaʿkufūnadevoted فَأَتَوْا عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ يَعْكُفُونَ عَلَىٰ أَصْنَامٍ لَهُمْ

Active participle

(2:125:20) wal-ʿākifīnaand those who seclude themselves for devotion and prayer أَنْ طَهِّرَا بَيْتِيَ لِلطَّائِفِينَ وَالْعَاكِفِينَ وَالرُّكَّعِ السُّجُودِ
(2:187:51) ʿākifūna(are) secluded وَلَا تُبَاشِرُوهُنَّ وَأَنْتُمْ عَاكِفُونَ فِي الْمَسَاجِدِ
(20:91:5) ʿākifīnabeing devoted to it قَالُوا لَنْ نَبْرَحَ عَلَيْهِ عَاكِفِينَ حَتَّىٰ يَرْجِعَ إِلَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ
(20:97:22) ʿākifandevoted وَانْظُرْ إِلَىٰ إِلَٰهِكَ الَّذِي ظَلْتَ عَلَيْهِ عَاكِفًا لَنُحَرِّقَنَّهُ
(21:52:11) ʿākifūna(are) devoted إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِ مَا هَٰذِهِ التَّمَاثِيلُ الَّتِي أَنْتُمْ لَهَا عَاكِفُونَ
(22:25:14) l-ʿākifu(are) the resident وَالْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ الَّذِي جَعَلْنَاهُ لِلنَّاسِ سَوَاءً الْعَاكِفُ فِيهِ وَالْبَادِ
(26:71:6) ʿākifīnadevoted قَالُوا نَعْبُدُ أَصْنَامًا فَنَظَلُّ لَهَا عَاكِفِينَ

Passive participle

(48:25:9) maʿkūfan(was) prevented وَصَدُّوكُمْ عَنِ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ وَالْهَدْيَ مَعْكُوفًا أَنْ يَبْلُغَ مَحِلَّهُ
