Quran Dictionary - ع ل ق


The triliteral root ʿayn lām qāf (ع ل ق) occurs seven times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • once as the noun ʿalaq (عَلَق)
  • five times as the noun ʿalaqat (عَلَقَة)
  • once as the form II passive participle muʿallaqat (مُعَلَّقَة)

(96:2:4) ʿalaqina clinging substance خَلَقَ الْإِنْسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ


(22:5:18) ʿalaqatina clinging substance فَإِنَّا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ مِنْ تُرَابٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ نُطْفَةٍ ثُمَّ مِنْ عَلَقَةٍ
(23:14:4) ʿalaqatan(into) a clinging substance ثُمَّ خَلَقْنَا النُّطْفَةَ عَلَقَةً
