Quran Dictionary - ع ق د


The triliteral root ʿayn qāf dāl (ع ق د) occurs seven times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb ʿaqadat (عَقَدَتْ)
  • once as the form II verb ʿaqqad (عَقَّد)
  • four times as the noun ʿuq'dat (عُقْدَة)
  • once as the noun ʿuqūd (عُقُود)

Verb (form I) - to pledge

(4:33:9) ʿaqadatpledged وَالَّذِينَ عَقَدَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ فَآتُوهُمْ نَصِيبَهُمْ

Verb (form II) - to contract

(5:89:10) ʿaqqadttumuyou contracted وَلَٰكِنْ يُؤَاخِذُكُمْ بِمَا عَقَّدْتُمُ الْأَيْمَانَ


(2:235:29) ʿuq'datathe knot وَلَا تَعْزِمُوا عُقْدَةَ النِّكَاحِ حَتَّىٰ يَبْلُغَ الْكِتَابُ أَجَلَهُ
(2:237:21) ʿuq'datu(is the) knot إِلَّا أَنْ يَعْفُونَ أَوْ يَعْفُوَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ عُقْدَةُ النِّكَاحِ
(20:27:2) ʿuq'datan(the) knot وَاحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِنْ لِسَانِي
(113:4:5) l-ʿuqadithe knots وَمِنْ شَرِّ النَّفَّاثَاتِ فِي الْعُقَدِ


(5:1:5) bil-ʿuqūdithe contracts يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَوْفُوا بِالْعُقُودِ
