The triliteral root khā wāw ḍād (خ و ض) occurs 12 times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • nine times as the form I verb khāḍu (خَاضُ)
  • twice as the verbal noun khawḍ (خَوْض)
  • once as the active participle khāiḍīn (خَآئِضِين)

Verb (form I) - to engage in idle talk, to converse vainly

(4:140:19) yakhūḍūthey engage فَلَا تَقْعُدُوا مَعَهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يَخُوضُوا فِي حَدِيثٍ غَيْرِهِ
(6:68:4) yakhūḍūnaengage (in vain talks) وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ الَّذِينَ يَخُوضُونَ فِي آيَاتِنَا فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ
(6:68:10) yakhūḍūthey engage فَأَعْرِضْ عَنْهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يَخُوضُوا فِي حَدِيثٍ غَيْرِهِ
(9:65:6) nakhūḍuconversing وَلَئِنْ سَأَلْتَهُمْ لَيَقُولُنَّ إِنَّمَا كُنَّا نَخُوضُ وَنَلْعَبُ
(9:69:21) wakhuḍ'tumand you indulge وَخُضْتُمْ كَالَّذِي خَاضُوا
(9:69:23) khāḍūindulges (in idle talk) وَخُضْتُمْ كَالَّذِي خَاضُوا
(43:83:2) yakhūḍū(to) converse vainly فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا وَيَلْعَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يُلَاقُوا يَوْمَهُمُ الَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ
(70:42:2) yakhūḍū(to) converse vainly فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُوضُوا وَيَلْعَبُوا حَتَّىٰ يُلَاقُوا يَوْمَهُمُ الَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ
