The triliteral root jīm wāw zāy (ج و ز) occurs five times in the Quran, in two derived forms:
- four times as the form III verb jāwaza (جَاوَزَ)
- once as the form VI verb natajāwazu (نَتَجَاوَزُ)

Verb (form III) - to cross, to pass beyond
(2:249:31) jāwazahu | he crossed it | فَلَمَّا جَاوَزَهُ هُوَ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَعَهُ قَالُوا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا الْيَوْمَ بِجَالُوتَ |
(7:138:1) wajāwaznā | And We led across | وَجَاوَزْنَا بِبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ الْبَحْرَ فَأَتَوْا عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ يَعْكُفُونَ عَلَىٰ أَصْنَامٍ لَهُمْ |
(10:90:1) wajāwaznā | And We took across | وَجَاوَزْنَا بِبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ الْبَحْرَ فَأَتْبَعَهُمْ فِرْعَوْنُ وَجُنُودُهُ بَغْيًا وَعَدْوًا |

Verb (form VI) - to overlook
(46:16:8) wanatajāwazu | and We will overlook | أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ نَتَقَبَّلُ عَنْهُمْ أَحْسَنَ مَا عَمِلُوا وَنَتَجَاوَزُ عَنْ سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ |
