Quran Dictionary - ج و ز

The triliteral root jīm wāw zāy (ج و ز) occurs five times in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • four times as the form III verb jāwaza (جَاوَزَ)
  • once as the form VI verb natajāwazu (نَتَجَاوَزُ)

Verb (form III) - to cross, to pass beyond

(2:249:31) jāwazahuhe crossed it فَلَمَّا جَاوَزَهُ هُوَ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مَعَهُ قَالُوا لَا طَاقَةَ لَنَا الْيَوْمَ بِجَالُوتَ
(7:138:1) wajāwaznāAnd We led across وَجَاوَزْنَا بِبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ الْبَحْرَ فَأَتَوْا عَلَىٰ قَوْمٍ يَعْكُفُونَ عَلَىٰ أَصْنَامٍ لَهُمْ
(10:90:1) wajāwaznāAnd We took across وَجَاوَزْنَا بِبَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ الْبَحْرَ فَأَتْبَعَهُمْ فِرْعَوْنُ وَجُنُودُهُ بَغْيًا وَعَدْوًا
(18:62:2) jāwazāthey had passed beyond فَلَمَّا جَاوَزَا قَالَ لِفَتَاهُ آتِنَا غَدَاءَنَا لَقَدْ لَقِينَا مِنْ سَفَرِنَا هَٰذَا نَصَبًا

Verb (form VI) - to overlook

(46:16:8) wanatajāwazuand We will overlook أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ نَتَقَبَّلُ عَنْهُمْ أَحْسَنَ مَا عَمِلُوا وَنَتَجَاوَزُ عَنْ سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ
