The triliteral root fā zāy ʿayn (ف ز ع) occurs six times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • three times as the form I verb faziʿa (فَزِعَ)
  • once as the form II verb fuzziʿa (فُزِّعَ)
  • twice as the noun fazaʿ (فَزَع)

Verb (form I) - to be terrified, to be afraid

(27:87:5) fafaziʿaand will be terrified فَفَزِعَ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ
(34:51:4) faziʿūthey will be terrified وَلَوْ تَرَىٰ إِذْ فَزِعُوا فَلَا فَوْتَ وَأُخِذُوا مِنْ مَكَانٍ قَرِيبٍ
(38:22:5) fafaziʿaand he was afraid إِذْ دَخَلُوا عَلَىٰ دَاوُودَ فَفَزِعَ مِنْهُمْ قَالُوا لَا تَخَفْ

Verb (form II) - to remove fear

(34:23:11) fuzziʿafear is removed حَتَّىٰ إِذَا فُزِّعَ عَنْ قُلُوبِهِمْ قَالُوا مَاذَا قَالَ رَبُّكُمْ قَالُوا الْحَقَّ

Noun

(21:103:3) l-fazaʿuthe terror لَا يَحْزُنُهُمُ الْفَزَعُ الْأَكْبَرُ
(27:89:9) fazaʿin(the) terror مَنْ جَاءَ بِالْحَسَنَةِ فَلَهُ خَيْرٌ مِنْهَا وَهُمْ مِنْ فَزَعٍ يَوْمَئِذٍ آمِنُونَ
