The triliteral root ṭā ghayn yā (ط غ ي) occurs 39 times in the Quran, in eight derived forms:

  • 12 times as the form I verb ṭaghā (طَغَىٰ)
  • once as the form IV verb aṭghay (أَطْغَيْ)
  • once as the noun aṭghā (أَطْغَىٰ)
  • eight times as the noun ṭāghūt (طَّٰغُوت)
  • once as the noun ṭaghwā (طَغْوَىٰ)

Verb (form I) - to transgress, to overflow

(11:112:8) taṭghawtransgress فَاسْتَقِمْ كَمَا أُمِرْتَ وَمَنْ تَابَ مَعَكَ وَلَا تَطْغَوْا
(20:24:5) ṭaghā(has) transgressed اذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُ طَغَىٰ
