The triliteral root sīn wāw qāf (س و ق) occurs 17 times in the Quran, in five derived forms:

  • seven times as the form I verb sīqa (سِيقَ)
  • four times as the noun sāq (سَاق)
  • four times as the noun sūq (سُّوق)
  • once as the noun masāq (مَسَاق)
  • once as the active participle sāiq (سَآئِق)

Verb (form I) - to drive

(7:57:14) suq'nāhuWe drive them حَتَّىٰ إِذَا أَقَلَّتْ سَحَابًا ثِقَالًا سُقْنَاهُ لِبَلَدٍ مَيِّتٍ فَأَنْزَلْنَا بِهِ الْمَاءَ
(8:6:7) yusāqūnathey were driven كَأَنَّمَا يُسَاقُونَ إِلَى الْمَوْتِ وَهُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ
(19:86:1) wanasūquAnd We will drive وَنَسُوقُ الْمُجْرِمِينَ إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ وِرْدًا
(32:27:4) nasūqudrive أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّا نَسُوقُ الْمَاءَ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ الْجُرُزِ فَنُخْرِجُ بِهِ زَرْعًا
(35:9:7) fasuq'nāhuand We drive them وَاللَّهُ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ الرِّيَاحَ فَتُثِيرُ سَحَابًا فَسُقْنَاهُ إِلَىٰ بَلَدٍ مَيِّتٍ
(39:71:1) wasīqaAnd (will) be driven وَسِيقَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ زُمَرًا
(39:73:1) wasīqaAnd (will) be driven وَسِيقَ الَّذِينَ اتَّقَوْا رَبَّهُمْ إِلَى الْجَنَّةِ زُمَرًا

Noun

(27:44:11) sāqayhāher shins فَلَمَّا رَأَتْهُ حَسِبَتْهُ لُجَّةً وَكَشَفَتْ عَنْ سَاقَيْهَا
(68:42:4) sāqinthe shin يَوْمَ يُكْشَفُ عَنْ سَاقٍ وَيُدْعَوْنَ إِلَى السُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ

(25:20:12) l-aswāqithe markets وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا قَبْلَكَ مِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ إِلَّا إِنَّهُمْ لَيَأْكُلُونَ الطَّعَامَ وَيَمْشُونَ فِي الْأَسْوَاقِ
(38:33:5) bil-sūqiover the legs رُدُّوهَا عَلَيَّ فَطَفِقَ مَسْحًا بِالسُّوقِ وَالْأَعْنَاقِ
(48:29:39) sūqihiits stem فَاسْتَغْلَظَ فَاسْتَوَىٰ عَلَىٰ سُوقِهِ يُعْجِبُ الزُّرَّاعَ

Noun

(75:30:4) l-masāqu(will be) the driving إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ الْمَسَاقُ

Active participle

(50:21:5) sāiquna driver وَجَاءَتْ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَعَهَا سَائِقٌ وَشَهِيدٌ
