The triliteral root sīn rā yā (س ر ي) occurs eight times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb yasri (يَسْرِ)
  • six times as the form IV verb asrā (أَسْرَىٰ)
  • once as the noun sariyy (سَرِيّ)

Verb (form I) - to pass, to set out

(89:4:3) yasriit passes وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ

Verb (form IV) - to travel, to take

(11:81:9) fa-asriSo travel فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنْكُمْ أَحَدٌ
(15:65:1) fa-asriSo travel فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ وَاتَّبِعْ أَدْبَارَهُمْ

(26:52:5) asriTravel by night وَأَوْحَيْنَا إِلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ أَنْ أَسْرِ بِعِبَادِي إِنَّكُمْ مُتَّبَعُونَ
(44:23:1) fa-asriThen "Set out فَأَسْرِ بِعِبَادِي لَيْلًا إِنَّكُمْ مُتَّبَعُونَ

(19:24:10) sariyyana stream فَنَادَاهَا مِنْ تَحْتِهَا أَلَّا تَحْزَنِي قَدْ جَعَلَ رَبُّكِ تَحْتَكِ سَرِيًّا
