The triliteral root ghayn yā ẓā (غ ي ظ) occurs 11 times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • three times as the form I verb yaghīẓu (يَغِيظُ)
  • six times as the noun ghayẓ (غَيْظ)
  • once as the active participle ghāiẓūn (غَآئِظُون)
  • once as the form V verbal noun taghayyuẓ (تَغَيُّظ)

Verb (form I) - to anger, to enrage

(9:120:34) yaghīẓuthat angers وَلَا يَطَئُونَ مَوْطِئًا يَغِيظُ الْكُفَّارَ وَلَا يَنَالُونَ مِنْ عَدُوٍّ نَيْلًا إِلَّا كُتِبَ لَهُمْ بِهِ عَمَلٌ صَالِحٌ
(22:15:22) yaghīẓuenrages ثُمَّ لْيَقْطَعْ فَلْيَنْظُرْ هَلْ يُذْهِبَنَّ كَيْدُهُ مَا يَغِيظُ
(48:29:42) liyaghīẓathat He (may) enrage فَاسْتَغْلَظَ فَاسْتَوَىٰ عَلَىٰ سُوقِهِ يُعْجِبُ الزُّرَّاعَ لِيَغِيظَ بِهِمُ الْكُفَّارَ

(67:8:4) l-ghayẓirage تَكَادُ تَمَيَّزُ مِنَ الْغَيْظِ

Active participle

(26:55:3) laghāiẓūna(are) surely enraging وَإِنَّهُمْ لَنَا لَغَائِظُونَ
