Quran Dictionary - ف ي ض

The triliteral root fā yā ḍād (ف ي ض) occurs nine times in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • twice as the form I verb tafīḍu (تَفِيضُ)
  • seven times as the form IV verb afāḍa (أَفَاضَ)

Verb (form I) - to overflow

(5:83:9) tafīḍuoverflowing تَرَىٰ أَعْيُنَهُمْ تَفِيضُ مِنَ الدَّمْعِ مِمَّا عَرَفُوا مِنَ الْحَقِّ
(9:92:16) tafīḍuflowing تَوَلَّوْا وَأَعْيُنُهُمْ تَفِيضُ مِنَ الدَّمْعِ حَزَنًا أَلَّا يَجِدُوا مَا يُنْفِقُونَ

Verb (form IV) - to depart

(2:198:10) afaḍtumyou depart فَإِذَا أَفَضْتُمْ مِنْ عَرَفَاتٍ فَاذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ عِنْدَ الْمَشْعَرِ الْحَرَامِ
(2:199:2) afīḍūdepart ثُمَّ أَفِيضُوا مِنْ حَيْثُ أَفَاضَ النَّاسُ وَاسْتَغْفِرُوا اللَّهَ
(2:199:5) afāḍadepart ثُمَّ أَفِيضُوا مِنْ حَيْثُ أَفَاضَ النَّاسُ وَاسْتَغْفِرُوا اللَّهَ
(7:50:7) afīḍūPour وَنَادَىٰ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ أَنْ أَفِيضُوا عَلَيْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ
(10:61:19) tufīḍūnayou are engaged إِلَّا كُنَّا عَلَيْكُمْ شُهُودًا إِذْ تُفِيضُونَ فِيهِ
(24:14:12) afaḍtumyou had rushed glibly لَمَسَّكُمْ فِي مَا أَفَضْتُمْ فِيهِ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ
(46:8:16) tufīḍūnayou utter هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا تُفِيضُونَ فِيهِ كَفَىٰ بِهِ شَهِيدًا بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكُمْ
