The triliteral root dāl ḥā ḍād (د ح ض) occurs four times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • twice as the form IV verb yud'ḥiḍu (يُدْحِضُ)
  • once as the active participle dāḥiḍat (دَاحِضَة)
  • once as the form IV passive participle mud'ḥaḍīn (مُدْحَضِين)

Verb (form IV) - to refute

(18:56:11) liyud'ḥiḍūto refute وَيُجَادِلُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِالْبَاطِلِ لِيُدْحِضُوا بِهِ الْحَقَّ
(40:5:15) liyud'ḥiḍūto refute وَجَادَلُوا بِالْبَاطِلِ لِيُدْحِضُوا بِهِ الْحَقَّ فَأَخَذْتُهُمْ

Active participle

(42:16:11) dāḥiḍatun(is) invalid وَالَّذِينَ يُحَاجُّونَ فِي اللَّهِ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا اسْتُجِيبَ لَهُ حُجَّتُهُمْ دَاحِضَةٌ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ

Passive participle (form IV)

(37:141:4) l-mud'ḥaḍīnathe losers فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ الْمُدْحَضِينَ
