The triliteral root ḥā rā fā (ح ر ف) occurs six times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • four times as the form II verb yuḥarrifu (يُحَرِّفُ)
  • once as the noun ḥarf (حَرْف)
  • once as the form V active participle mutaḥarrif (مُتَحَرِّف)

Verb (form II) - to distort

(2:75:13) yuḥarrifūnahuthey distort it وَقَدْ كَانَ فَرِيقٌ مِنْهُمْ يَسْمَعُونَ كَلَامَ اللَّهِ ثُمَّ يُحَرِّفُونَهُ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا عَقَلُوهُ
(4:46:4) yuḥarrifūnathey distort مِنَ الَّذِينَ هَادُوا يُحَرِّفُونَ الْكَلِمَ عَنْ مَوَاضِعِهِ
