The triliteral root ʿayn ṣād bā (ع ص ب) occurs five times in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • four times as the noun ʿuṣ'bat (عُصْبَة)
  • once as the adjective ʿaṣīb (عَصِيب)

(12:8:10) ʿuṣ'batun(are) a group أَحَبُّ إِلَىٰ أَبِينَا مِنَّا وَنَحْنُ عُصْبَةٌ
(12:14:6) ʿuṣ'batun(are) a group قَالُوا لَئِنْ أَكَلَهُ الذِّئْبُ وَنَحْنُ عُصْبَةٌ إِنَّا إِذًا لَخَاسِرُونَ
(24:11:5) ʿuṣ'batun(are) a group إِنَّ الَّذِينَ جَاءُوا بِالْإِفْكِ عُصْبَةٌ مِنْكُمْ
(28:76:16) bil-ʿuṣ'batia company (of men) وَآتَيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْكُنُوزِ مَا إِنَّ مَفَاتِحَهُ لَتَنُوءُ بِالْعُصْبَةِ


(11:77:13) ʿaṣībundistressful سِيءَ بِهِمْ وَضَاقَ بِهِمْ ذَرْعًا وَقَالَ هَٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَصِيبٌ
