The triliteral root ḍād rā ʿayn (ض ر ع) occurs eight times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb taḍarraʿu (تَضَرَّعُ)
  • three times as the form V verb yataḍarraʿu (يَتَضَرَّعُ)
  • once as the noun ḍarīʿ (ضَرِيع)
  • three times as the form V verbal noun taḍarruʿ (تَضَرُّع)

Verb (form I) - to humble

(6:43:5) taḍarraʿūthey humbled themselves فَلَوْلَا إِذْ جَاءَهُمْ بَأْسُنَا تَضَرَّعُوا وَلَٰكِنْ قَسَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ

Verb (form V) - to humble

(6:42:11) yataḍarraʿūnahumble themselves فَأَخَذْنَاهُمْ بِالْبَأْسَاءِ وَالضَّرَّاءِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَضَرَّعُونَ
(7:94:13) yaḍḍarraʿūna(become) humble إِلَّا أَخَذْنَا أَهْلَهَا بِالْبَأْسَاءِ وَالضَّرَّاءِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَضَّرَّعُونَ
(23:76:8) yataḍarraʿūnathey supplicate humbly وَلَقَدْ أَخَذْنَاهُمْ بِالْعَذَابِ فَمَا اسْتَكَانُوا لِرَبِّهِمْ وَمَا يَتَضَرَّعُونَ
