The triliteral root ḍād ḥā kāf (ض ح ك) occurs 10 times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • seven times as the form I verb ḍaḥikat (ضَحِكَتْ)
  • once as the form IV verb aḍḥaka (أَضْحَكَ)
  • once as the active participle ḍāḥik (ضَاحِك)
  • once as the active participle ḍāḥikat (ضَاحِكَة)

Verb (form I) - to laugh

(9:82:1) falyaḍḥakūSo let them laugh فَلْيَضْحَكُوا قَلِيلًا وَلْيَبْكُوا كَثِيرًا جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ
(11:71:3) faḍaḥikatand she laughed وَامْرَأَتُهُ قَائِمَةٌ فَضَحِكَتْ فَبَشَّرْنَاهَا بِإِسْحَاقَ
(23:110:8) taḍḥakūnalaugh وَكُنْتُمْ مِنْهُمْ تَضْحَكُونَ
(43:47:7) yaḍḥakūnalaughed فَلَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ بِآيَاتِنَا إِذَا هُمْ مِنْهَا يَضْحَكُونَ
(53:60:1) wataḍḥakūnaAnd you laugh وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ
(83:29:8) yaḍḥakūnalaugh إِنَّ الَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا كَانُوا مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا يَضْحَكُونَ
(83:34:6) yaḍḥakūnathey will laugh فَالْيَوْمَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ

Verb (form IV) - to make laugh

(53:43:3) aḍḥakamakes (one) laugh وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ

Active participle

(27:19:2) ḍāḥikanlaughing فَتَبَسَّمَ ضَاحِكًا مِنْ قَوْلِهَا

Active participle

(80:39:1) ḍāḥikatunLaughing ضَاحِكَةٌ مُسْتَبْشِرَةٌ
