Quran Dictionary - و ج ل

The triliteral root wāw jīm lām (و ج ل) occurs five times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • three times as the form I verb wajilat (وَجِلَتْ)
  • once as the noun wajilūn (وَجِلُون)
  • once as the adjective wajilat (وَجِلَة)

Verb (form I) - to feel fear, to be afraid

(8:2:7) wajilatfeel fear إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ الَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ
(15:53:3) tawjalbe afraid قَالُوا لَا تَوْجَلْ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَامٍ عَلِيمٍ
(22:35:5) wajilatfear الَّذِينَ إِذَا ذُكِرَ اللَّهُ وَجِلَتْ قُلُوبُهُمْ وَالصَّابِرِينَ عَلَىٰ مَا أَصَابَهُمْ

Noun

(15:52:9) wajilūnaafraid إِذْ دَخَلُوا عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا سَلَامًا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنْكُمْ وَجِلُونَ

Adjective

(23:60:6) wajilatun(are) fearful وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْتُونَ مَا آتَوْا وَقُلُوبُهُمْ وَجِلَةٌ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ رَاجِعُونَ
