Quran Dictionary - و ع ي

The triliteral root wāw ʿayn yā (و ع ي) occurs seven times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb taʿiya (تَعِيَ)
  • twice as the form IV verb awʿā (أَوْعَىٰٓ)
  • three times as the noun wiʿā (وِعَآء)
  • once as the active participle wāʿiyat (وَٰعِيَة)

Verb (form I) - to be conscious

(69:12:4) wataʿiyahāand would be conscious of it لِنَجْعَلَهَا لَكُمْ تَذْكِرَةً وَتَعِيَهَا أُذُنٌ وَاعِيَةٌ

Verb (form IV) - to hoard, to keep

(70:18:2) fa-awʿāand hoarded وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰ
(84:23:4) yūʿūnathey keep within themselves وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُوعُونَ

(12:76:2) bi-awʿiyatihimwith their bags فَبَدَأَ بِأَوْعِيَتِهِمْ قَبْلَ وِعَاءِ أَخِيهِ
(12:76:4) wiʿāi(the) bag فَبَدَأَ بِأَوْعِيَتِهِمْ قَبْلَ وِعَاءِ أَخِيهِ
