The triliteral root rā ʿayn yā (ر ع ي) occurs 10 times in the Quran, in six derived forms:

  • twice as the form I verb raʿa (رَعَ)
  • twice as the form III verb rāʿi (رَٰعِ)
  • twice as the noun marʿā (مَرْعَىٰ)
  • once as the verbal noun riʿāyat (رِعَايَت)
  • twice as the active participle rāʿūn (رَٰعُون)
  • once as the form III verbal noun riʿā (رِّعَآء)

Verb (form I) - to pasture, to observe

(20:54:2) wa-ir'ʿawand pasture كُلُوا وَارْعَوْا أَنْعَامَكُمْ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِأُولِي النُّهَىٰ
(57:27:29) raʿawhāthey observed it فَمَا رَعَوْهَا حَقَّ رِعَايَتِهَا

Verb (form III) - to observe

(2:104:6) rāʿināRaina يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَقُولُوا رَاعِنَا وَقُولُوا انْظُرْنَا وَاسْمَعُوا
(4:46:14) warāʿināand "Raina وَيَقُولُونَ سَمِعْنَا وَعَصَيْنَا وَاسْمَعْ غَيْرَ مُسْمَعٍ وَرَاعِنَا لَيًّا بِأَلْسِنَتِهِمْ

(79:31:4) wamarʿāhāand its pasture أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَاءَهَا وَمَرْعَاهَا
(87:4:3) l-marʿāthe pasture وَالَّذِي أَخْرَجَ الْمَرْعَىٰ
