The triliteral root kāf fā lām (ك ف ل) occurs 10 times in the Quran, in five derived forms:

  • three times as the form I verb yakfulu (يَكْفُلُ)
  • once as the form II verb kaffala (كَفَّلَ)
  • once as the form IV verb akfil (أَكْفِلْ)
  • four times as the noun kif'l (كِفْل)
  • once as the noun kafīl (كَفِيل)

Verb (form I) - to take charge, to nurse, to rear

(3:44:14) yakfulutakes charge (of) وَمَا كُنْتَ لَدَيْهِمْ إِذْ يُلْقُونَ أَقْلَامَهُمْ أَيُّهُمْ يَكْفُلُ مَرْيَمَ
(20:40:9) yakfuluhuwill nurse and rear him إِذْ تَمْشِي أُخْتُكَ فَتَقُولُ هَلْ أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَىٰ مَنْ يَكْفُلُهُ
(28:12:12) yakfulūnahuwho will rear him فَقَالَتْ هَلْ أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلَىٰ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ يَكْفُلُونَهُ لَكُمْ

Verb (form II) - to put in care

(3:37:8) wakaffalahāand put her in (the) care وَأَنْبَتَهَا نَبَاتًا حَسَنًا وَكَفَّلَهَا زَكَرِيَّا
