The triliteral root shīn rā ʿayn (ش ر ع) occurs five times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • twice as the form I verb sharaʿa (شَرَعَ)
  • once as the noun shurraʿ (شُرَّع)
  • once as the noun shir'ʿat (شِرْعَة)
  • once as the noun sharīʿat (شَرِيعَة)

Verb (form I) - to ordain

(42:13:1) sharaʿaHe has ordained شَرَعَ لَكُمْ مِنَ الدِّينِ مَا وَصَّىٰ بِهِ نُوحًا وَالَّذِي أَوْحَيْنَا إِلَيْكَ
(42:21:4) sharaʿūwho have ordained أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ شَرَعُوا لَهُمْ مِنَ الدِّينِ مَا لَمْ يَأْذَنْ بِهِ اللَّهُ
