The triliteral root mīm ḍād yā (م ض ي) occurs five times in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • four times as the form I verb maḍā (مَضَىٰ)
  • once as the noun muḍiyy (مُضِيّ)

Verb (form I) - to go on, to continue, to pass

(8:38:14) maḍatpreceded وَإِنْ يَعُودُوا فَقَدْ مَضَتْ سُنَّتُ الْأَوَّلِينَ
(15:65:12) wa-im'ḍūand go on وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنْكُمْ أَحَدٌ وَامْضُوا حَيْثُ تُؤْمَرُونَ
(18:60:12) amḍiyaI continue لَا أَبْرَحُ حَتَّىٰ أَبْلُغَ مَجْمَعَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ أَوْ أَمْضِيَ حُقُبًا
(43:8:5) wamaḍāand has passed فَأَهْلَكْنَا أَشَدَّ مِنْهُمْ بَطْشًا وَمَضَىٰ مَثَلُ الْأَوَّلِينَ
