Quran Dictionary - ل ف ت

The triliteral root lām fā tā (ل ف ت) occurs three times in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb talfita (تَلْفِتَ)
  • twice as the form VIII verb yaltafit (يَلْتَفِتْ)

Verb (form I) - to turn away

(10:78:3) litalfitanāto turn us away قَالُوا أَجِئْتَنَا لِتَلْفِتَنَا عَمَّا وَجَدْنَا عَلَيْهِ آبَاءَنَا

Verb (form VIII) - to look back

(11:81:15) yaltafitlook back فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنْكُمْ أَحَدٌ
(15:65:9) yaltafitlet look back وَاتَّبِعْ أَدْبَارَهُمْ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنْكُمْ أَحَدٌ وَامْضُوا حَيْثُ تُؤْمَرُونَ
