The triliteral root bā kāf yā (ب ك ي) occurs seven times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • five times as the form I verb bakat (بَكَتْ)
  • once as the form IV verb abkā (أَبْكَىٰ)
  • once as the noun bukiyy (بُكِيّ)

Verb (form I) - to weep

(9:82:3) walyabkūand let them weep فَلْيَضْحَكُوا قَلِيلًا وَلْيَبْكُوا كَثِيرًا جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ
(12:16:4) yabkūnaweeping وَجَاءُوا أَبَاهُمْ عِشَاءً يَبْكُونَ
(17:109:3) yabkūnaweeping وَيَخِرُّونَ لِلْأَذْقَانِ يَبْكُونَ وَيَزِيدُهُمْ خُشُوعًا
(44:29:2) bakatwept فَمَا بَكَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّمَاءُ وَالْأَرْضُ وَمَا كَانُوا مُنْظَرِينَ
(53:60:3) tabkūnaweep وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَ

Verb (form IV) - to make weep

(53:43:4) wa-abkāand makes (one) weep وَأَنَّهُ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰ

(19:58:29) wabukiyyanand weeping إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتُ الرَّحْمَٰنِ خَرُّوا سُجَّدًا وَبُكِيًّا
