The triliteral root bā lām sīn (ب ل س) occurs five times in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • once as the form IV verb yub'lisu (يُبْلِسُ)
  • four times as the form IV active participle mub'lisūn (مُبْلِسُون)

Verb (form IV) - to despair

(30:12:4) yub'lisuwill (be in) despair وَيَوْمَ تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ يُبْلِسُ الْمُجْرِمُونَ

Active participle (form IV)

(6:44:20) mub'lisūna(were) dumbfounded حَتَّىٰ إِذَا فَرِحُوا بِمَا أُوتُوا أَخَذْنَاهُمْ بَغْتَةً فَإِذَا هُمْ مُبْلِسُونَ
(23:77:12) mub'lisūna(will be in) despair حَتَّىٰ إِذَا فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ بَابًا ذَا عَذَابٍ شَدِيدٍ إِذَا هُمْ فِيهِ مُبْلِسُونَ
(30:49:10) lamub'lisīnasurely in despair وَإِنْ كَانُوا مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يُنَزَّلَ عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِ لَمُبْلِسِينَ
(43:75:6) mub'lisūna(will) despair لَا يُفَتَّرُ عَنْهُمْ وَهُمْ فِيهِ مُبْلِسُونَ
