The triliteral root mīm kāf thā (م ك ث) occurs seven times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • four times as the form I verb makatha (مَكَثَ)
  • once as the noun muk'th (مُكْث)
  • twice as the active participle mākithīn (مَّٰكِثِين)

Verb (form I) - to stay, to remain

(13:17:36) fayamkuthuremains وَأَمَّا مَا يَنْفَعُ النَّاسَ فَيَمْكُثُ فِي الْأَرْضِ
(20:10:6) um'kuthūStay here فَقَالَ لِأَهْلِهِ امْكُثُوا إِنِّي آنَسْتُ نَارًا
(27:22:1) famakathaSo he stayed فَمَكَثَ غَيْرَ بَعِيدٍ فَقَالَ أَحَطْتُ بِمَا لَمْ تُحِطْ بِهِ
(28:29:14) um'kuthūStay here قَالَ لِأَهْلِهِ امْكُثُوا إِنِّي آنَسْتُ نَارًا لَعَلِّي آتِيكُمْ مِنْهَا بِخَبَرٍ
