Quran Dictionary - ق ب ض

The triliteral root qāf bā ḍād (ق ب ض) occurs nine times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • five times as the form I verb qabaḍ (قَبَضْ)
  • once as the noun qabḍ (قَبْض)
  • twice as the noun qabḍat (قَبْضَة)
  • once as the passive participle maqbūḍat (مَّقْبُوضَة)

Verb (form I) - to withhold, to withdraw, to close

(2:245:13) yaqbiḍuwithholds وَاللَّهُ يَقْبِضُ وَيَبْسُطُ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ
(9:67:11) wayaqbiḍūnaand they close وَيَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمَعْرُوفِ وَيَقْبِضُونَ أَيْدِيَهُمْ
(20:96:7) faqabaḍtuso I took فَقَبَضْتُ قَبْضَةً مِنْ أَثَرِ الرَّسُولِ

(2:283:9) maqbūḍatunin hand وَإِنْ كُنْتُمْ عَلَىٰ سَفَرٍ وَلَمْ تَجِدُوا كَاتِبًا فَرِهَانٌ مَقْبُوضَةٌ
