The triliteral root kāf ẓā mīm (ك ظ م) occurs six times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • three times as the noun kaẓīm (كَظِيم)
  • twice as the active participle kāẓimīn (كَٰظِمِين)
  • once as the passive participle makẓūm (مَكْظُوم)

(12:84:12) kaẓīmuna suppressor وَابْيَضَّتْ عَيْنَاهُ مِنَ الْحُزْنِ فَهُوَ كَظِيمٌ
(16:58:9) kaẓīmunsuppresses grief وَإِذَا بُشِّرَ أَحَدُهُمْ بِالْأُنْثَىٰ ظَلَّ وَجْهُهُ مُسْوَدًّا وَهُوَ كَظِيمٌ
(43:17:12) kaẓīmun(is) filled with grief ظَلَّ وَجْهُهُ مُسْوَدًّا وَهُوَ كَظِيمٌ

Active participle

(3:134:6) wal-kāẓimīnaand those who restrain الَّذِينَ يُنْفِقُونَ فِي السَّرَّاءِ وَالضَّرَّاءِ وَالْكَاظِمِينَ الْغَيْظَ وَالْعَافِينَ عَنِ النَّاسِ
(40:18:8) kāẓimīnachoked وَأَنْذِرْهُمْ يَوْمَ الْآزِفَةِ إِذِ الْقُلُوبُ لَدَى الْحَنَاجِرِ كَاظِمِينَ

Passive participle

(68:48:11) makẓūmun(was) distressed وَلَا تَكُنْ كَصَاحِبِ الْحُوتِ إِذْ نَادَىٰ وَهُوَ مَكْظُومٌ
