Quran Dictionary - د ر أ

The triliteral root dāl rā hamza (د ر أ) occurs five times in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • four times as the form I verb yadra-u (يَدْرَؤُا۟)
  • once as the form VI verb iddāra (ٱدَّٰرَْٰٔ)

Verb (form I) - to avert, to repel, to prevent

(3:168:10) fa-id'raūThen avert قُلْ فَادْرَءُوا عَنْ أَنْفُسِكُمُ الْمَوْتَ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ
(13:22:13) wayadraūnaand they repel وَيَدْرَءُونَ بِالْحَسَنَةِ السَّيِّئَةَ أُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمْ عُقْبَى الدَّارِ
(24:8:1) wayadra-uBut it would prevent وَيَدْرَأُ عَنْهَا الْعَذَابَ أَنْ تَشْهَدَ أَرْبَعَ شَهَادَاتٍ بِاللَّهِ إِنَّهُ لَمِنَ الْكَاذِبِينَ
(28:54:7) wayadraūnaand they repel أُولَٰئِكَ يُؤْتَوْنَ أَجْرَهُمْ مَرَّتَيْنِ بِمَا صَبَرُوا وَيَدْرَءُونَ بِالْحَسَنَةِ السَّيِّئَةَ

Verb (form VI) - to dispute

(2:72:4) fa-iddāratumthen you disputed وَإِذْ قَتَلْتُمْ نَفْسًا فَادَّارَأْتُمْ فِيهَا
