The triliteral root ṣād lām yā (ص ل ي) occurs 25 times in the Quran, in eight derived forms:

  • 13 times as the form I verb yaṣlā (يَصْلَى)
  • once as the form II verb ṣallu (صَلُّ)
  • four times as the form IV verb uṣ'lī (أُصْلِي)
  • twice as the form VIII verb taṣṭalu (تَصْطَلُ)
  • once as the noun ṣiliyy (صِلِيّ)
  • once as the active participle ṣāl (صَال)
  • twice as the active participle ṣālū (صَالُوا)
  • once as the form II verbal noun taṣliyat (تَصْلِيَة)

Verb (form I) - to burn

(4:10:12) wasayaṣlawnaand they will be burned إِنَّمَا يَأْكُلُونَ فِي بُطُونِهِمْ نَارًا وَسَيَصْلَوْنَ سَعِيرًا
(14:29:2) yaṣlawnahā(in) it they will burn جَهَنَّمَ يَصْلَوْنَهَا وَبِئْسَ الْقَرَارُ

(92:15:2) yaṣlāhāwill burn (in) it لَا يَصْلَاهَا إِلَّا الْأَشْقَى
(111:3:1) sayaṣlāHe will be burnt سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ

Verb (form II) - to burn

(69:31:3) ṣallūhuburn him ثُمَّ الْجَحِيمَ صَلُّوهُ

(4:30:7) nuṣ'līhiWe (will) cast him وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَٰلِكَ عُدْوَانًا وَظُلْمًا فَسَوْفَ نُصْلِيهِ نَارًا
(4:56:6) nuṣ'līhimWe will burn them إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا سَوْفَ نُصْلِيهِمْ نَارًا
(4:115:17) wanuṣ'lihiand We will burn him نُوَلِّهِ مَا تَوَلَّىٰ وَنُصْلِهِ جَهَنَّمَ وَسَاءَتْ مَصِيرًا
(74:26:1) sa-uṣ'līhiSoon I will drive him سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ

(27:7:16) taṣṭalūnawarm yourselves أَوْ آتِيكُمْ بِشِهَابٍ قَبَسٍ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَصْطَلُونَ
(28:29:27) taṣṭalūnawarm yourselves لَعَلِّي آتِيكُمْ مِنْهَا بِخَبَرٍ أَوْ جَذْوَةٍ مِنَ النَّارِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَصْطَلُونَ
