Quran Dictionary - ح ص ر

The triliteral root ḥā ṣād rā (ح ص ر) occurs six times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • twice as the form I verb ḥaṣirat (حَصِرَتْ)
  • twice as the form IV verb uḥ'ṣiru (أُحْصِرُ)
  • once as the noun ḥaṣūr (حَصُور)
  • once as the noun ḥaṣīr (حَصِير)

Verb (form I) - to restrain, to besiege

(4:90:11) ḥaṣiratrestraining أَوْ جَاءُوكُمْ حَصِرَتْ صُدُورُهُمْ أَنْ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ أَوْ يُقَاتِلُوا قَوْمَهُمْ
(9:5:10) wa-uḥ'ṣurūhumand besiege them وَخُذُوهُمْ وَاحْصُرُوهُمْ وَاقْعُدُوا لَهُمْ كُلَّ مَرْصَدٍ

Verb (form IV) - to hold back, to wrap up

(2:196:6) uḥ'ṣir'tumyou are held back فَإِنْ أُحْصِرْتُمْ فَمَا اسْتَيْسَرَ مِنَ الْهَدْيِ
(2:273:3) uḥ'ṣirūare wrapped up لِلْفُقَرَاءِ الَّذِينَ أُحْصِرُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ

(3:39:17) waḥaṣūranand chaste أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُبَشِّرُكَ بِيَحْيَىٰ مُصَدِّقًا بِكَلِمَةٍ مِنَ اللَّهِ وَسَيِّدًا وَحَصُورًا

(17:8:11) ḥaṣīrana prison-bed وَجَعَلْنَا جَهَنَّمَ لِلْكَافِرِينَ حَصِيرًا
