The triliteral root zāy yā ghayn (ز ي غ) occurs nine times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • six times as the form I verb zāgha (زَاغَ)
  • twice as the form IV verb azāgha (أَزَاغَ)
  • once as the noun zaygh (زَيْغ)

Verb (form I) - to deviate, to turn away, to swerve

(9:117:17) yazīghudeviated مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا كَادَ يَزِيغُ قُلُوبُ فَرِيقٍ مِنْهُمْ ثُمَّ تَابَ عَلَيْهِمْ
(33:10:9) zāghatigrew wild إِذْ جَاءُوكُمْ مِنْ فَوْقِكُمْ وَمِنْ أَسْفَلَ مِنْكُمْ وَإِذْ زَاغَتِ الْأَبْصَارُ
(34:12:20) yazighdeviated وَمَنْ يَزِغْ مِنْهُمْ عَنْ أَمْرِنَا نُذِقْهُ مِنْ عَذَابِ السَّعِيرِ
(38:63:4) zāghathas turned away أَتَّخَذْنَاهُمْ سِخْرِيًّا أَمْ زَاغَتْ عَنْهُمُ الْأَبْصَارُ
(53:17:2) zāghaswerved مَا زَاغَ الْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ
(61:5:15) zāghūthey deviated فَلَمَّا زَاغُوا أَزَاغَ اللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُمْ

Verb (form IV) - to deviate

(3:8:3) tuzighdeviate رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا
(61:5:16) azāgha(was caused to) deviate فَلَمَّا زَاغُوا أَزَاغَ اللَّهُ قُلُوبَهُمْ

(3:7:18) zayghun(is) perversity فَأَمَّا الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ زَيْغٌ فَيَتَّبِعُونَ مَا تَشَابَهَ مِنْهُ
