The triliteral root tā rā fā (ت ر ف) occurs eight times in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • three times as the form IV verb ut'rifu (أُتْرِفُ)
  • five times as the form IV passive participle mut'rafīn (مُتْرَفِين)

Verb (form IV) - to give luxury

(11:116:23) ut'rifūluxury they were given وَاتَّبَعَ الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا مَا أُتْرِفُوا فِيهِ وَكَانُوا مُجْرِمِينَ
(21:13:6) ut'rif'tumyou were given luxury لَا تَرْكُضُوا وَارْجِعُوا إِلَىٰ مَا أُتْرِفْتُمْ فِيهِ
(23:33:10) wa-atrafnāhumwhile We had given them luxury الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَكَذَّبُوا بِلِقَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ وَأَتْرَفْنَاهُمْ فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا

Passive participle (form IV)

(17:16:7) mut'rafīhāits wealthy people وَإِذَا أَرَدْنَا أَنْ نُهْلِكَ قَرْيَةً أَمَرْنَا مُتْرَفِيهَا فَفَسَقُوا فِيهَا
(23:64:4) mut'rafīhimtheir affluent ones حَتَّىٰ إِذَا أَخَذْنَا مُتْرَفِيهِمْ بِالْعَذَابِ إِذَا هُمْ يَجْأَرُونَ
(34:34:9) mut'rafūhāits wealthy ones وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا فِي قَرْيَةٍ مِنْ نَذِيرٍ إِلَّا قَالَ مُتْرَفُوهَا إِنَّا بِمَا أُرْسِلْتُمْ بِهِ كَافِرُونَ
(43:23:12) mut'rafūhā(the) wealthy ones of it إِلَّا قَالَ مُتْرَفُوهَا إِنَّا وَجَدْنَا آبَاءَنَا عَلَىٰ أُمَّةٍ
(56:45:5) mut'rafīnaindulging in affluence إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ
