Quran Dictionary - س ف ح

The triliteral root sīn fā ḥā (س ف ح) occurs four times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • once as the passive participle masfūḥ (مَّسْفُوح)
  • once as the form III active participle musāfiḥāt (مُسَٰفِحَٰت)
  • twice as the form III active participle musāfiḥīn (مُسَٰفِحِين)

Passive participle

(6:145:18) masfūḥanpoured forth إِلَّا أَنْ يَكُونَ مَيْتَةً أَوْ دَمًا مَسْفُوحًا أَوْ لَحْمَ خِنْزِيرٍ

Active participle (form III)

(4:25:31) musāfiḥātinthose who commit immorality وَآتُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ مُحْصَنَاتٍ غَيْرَ مُسَافِحَاتٍ

Active participle (form III)

(4:24:21) musāfiḥīna(to be) lustful وَأُحِلَّ لَكُمْ مَا وَرَاءَ ذَٰلِكُمْ أَنْ تَبْتَغُوا بِأَمْوَالِكُمْ مُحْصِنِينَ غَيْرَ مُسَافِحِينَ
(5:5:29) musāfiḥīnabeing lewd إِذَا آتَيْتُمُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّ مُحْصِنِينَ غَيْرَ مُسَافِحِينَ وَلَا مُتَّخِذِي أَخْدَانٍ
