Quran Dictionary - ف ي أ

The triliteral root fā yā hamza (ف ي أ) occurs seven times in the Quran, in three derived forms:

  • three times as the form I verb fāu (فَآءُ)
  • three times as the form IV verb afāa (أَفَآءَ)
  • once as the form V verb yatafayya-u (يَتَفَيَّؤُا۟)

Verb (form I) - to return

(2:226:9) fāūthey return فَإِنْ فَاءُوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ
(49:9:17) tafīait returns فَقَاتِلُوا الَّتِي تَبْغِي حَتَّىٰ تَفِيءَ إِلَىٰ أَمْرِ اللَّهِ
(49:9:22) fāatit returns فَإِنْ فَاءَتْ فَأَصْلِحُوا بَيْنَهُمَا بِالْعَدْلِ وَأَقْسِطُوا

Verb (form IV) - to give, to restore

(33:50:14) afāaAllah has given وَمَا مَلَكَتْ يَمِينُكَ مِمَّا أَفَاءَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ
(59:6:2) afāa(was) restored وَمَا أَفَاءَ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِ مِنْهُمْ فَمَا أَوْجَفْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ خَيْلٍ
(59:7:2) afāa(was) restored مَا أَفَاءَ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ رَسُولِهِ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْقُرَىٰ فَلِلَّهِ وَلِلرَّسُولِ

Verb (form V) - to incline

(16:48:9) yatafayya-uIncline يَتَفَيَّأُ ظِلَالُهُ عَنِ الْيَمِينِ وَالشَّمَائِلِ سُجَّدًا لِلَّهِ
