Quran Dictionary - ح س س

The triliteral root ḥā sīn sīn (ح س س) occurs six times in the Quran, in four derived forms:

  • once as the form I verb taḥussu (تَحُسُّ)
  • three times as the form IV verb aḥassa (أَحَسَّ)
  • once as the form V verb taḥassasu (تَحَسَّسُ)
  • once as the noun ḥasīs (حَسِيس)

Verb (form I) - to inquire, to kill

(3:152:6) taḥussūnahumyou were killing them وَلَقَدْ صَدَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ وَعْدَهُ إِذْ تَحُسُّونَهُمْ بِإِذْنِهِ

Verb (form IV) - to perceive

(3:52:2) aḥassaperceived فَلَمَّا أَحَسَّ عِيسَىٰ مِنْهُمُ الْكُفْرَ قَالَ مَنْ أَنْصَارِي إِلَى اللَّهِ
(19:98:7) tuḥissuyou perceive هَلْ تُحِسُّ مِنْهُمْ مِنْ أَحَدٍ أَوْ تَسْمَعُ لَهُمْ رِكْزًا
(21:12:2) aḥassūthey perceived فَلَمَّا أَحَسُّوا بَأْسَنَا إِذَا هُمْ مِنْهَا يَرْكُضُونَ

Verb (form V) - to inquire

(12:87:3) fataḥassasūand inquire يَا بَنِيَّ اذْهَبُوا فَتَحَسَّسُوا مِنْ يُوسُفَ وَأَخِيهِ

Noun

(21:102:3) ḥasīsahā(the) slightest sound of it لَا يَسْمَعُونَ حَسِيسَهَا وَهُمْ فِي مَا اشْتَهَتْ أَنْفُسُهُمْ خَالِدُونَ
