جملة «فأخذتهم» معطوفة على جملة «جادلوا»، وجملة «فكيف كان عقاب» معطوفة على جملة «فأخذتهم»، «كيف» اسم استفهام خبر كان، و«عقاب» اسم كان مرفوع بالضمة المقدرة، على ما قبل الياء المحذوفة للتخفيف.
