Quran Dictionary - ع ط ل

The triliteral root ʿayn ṭā lām (ع ط ل) occurs twice in the Quran, in two derived forms:

  • once as the form II verb ʿuṭṭilat (عُطِّلَتْ)
  • once as the form II passive participle muʿaṭṭalat (مُّعَطَّلَة)

Verb (form II) - to leave untended

(81:4:3) ʿuṭṭilat(are) left untended وَإِذَا الْعِشَارُ عُطِّلَتْ

Passive participle (form II)

(22:45:12) muʿaṭṭalatinabandoned فَهِيَ خَاوِيَةٌ عَلَىٰ عُرُوشِهَا وَبِئْرٍ مُعَطَّلَةٍ وَقَصْرٍ مَشِيدٍ
