The sixteenth word of verse (5:52) is an imperfect verb (فعل مضارع). The verb is third person masculine singular and is in the subjunctive mood (منصوب). The verb's triliteral root is hamza tā yā (أ ت ي).

Sahih International: So you see those in whose hearts is disease hastening into [association with] them, saying, "We are afraid a misfortune may strike us."
