Verse (33:33), Word 4 - Quranic Grammar


The fourth word of verse (33:33) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A conjunction and prohibition particle. The prefixed conjunction wa is usually translated as "and". The prohibition particle (حرف نهي) is used to form a negative imperative and places the following verb into the jussive mood (مجزوم).

Verse (33:33)

The analysis above refers to the 33rd verse of chapter 33 (sūrat l-aḥzāb):

Sahih International: And abide in your houses and do not display yourselves as [was] the display of the former times of ignorance. And establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah intends only to remove from you the impurity [of sin], O people of the [Prophet's] household, and to purify you with [extensive] purification.
