Verse (2:191), Word 12 - Quranic Grammar

The twelfth word of verse (2:191) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A conjunction and prohibition particle. The prefixed conjunction wa is usually translated as "and". The prohibition particle (حرف نهي) is used to form a negative imperative and places the following verb into the jussive mood (مجزوم).

Verse (2:191)

Sahih International: And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al- îaram until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.
