Verse (3:167), Word 1 - Quranic Grammar

The first word of verse (3:167) is divided into 3 morphological segments. A conjunction, particle of purpose and verb. The prefixed conjunction wa is usually translated as "and". The prefixed particle lām is used to indicate the purpose of an action and makes the following verb subjunctive. The imperfect verb (فعل مضارع) is third person masculine singular and is in the subjunctive mood (منصوب). The verb's triliteral root is ʿayn lām mīm (ع ل م).

Verse (3:167)

The analysis above refers to the 167th verse of chapter 3 (sūrat āl ʿim'rān):

Sahih International: And that He might make evident those who are hypocrites. For it was said to them, "Come, fight in the way of Allah or [at least] defend." They said, "If we had known [there would be] fighting, we would have followed you." They were nearer to disbelief that day than to faith, saying with their mouths what was not in their hearts.
