Verse (9:5), Word 12 - Quranic Grammar

The twelfth word of verse (9:5) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A preposition and personal pronoun. The prefixed preposition lām is usually translated as "for". The personal pronoun is third person masculine plural. Together the segments form a preposition phrase known as jār wa majrūr (جار ومجرور).

Sahih International: And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
