Verse (9:42), Word 16 - Quranic Grammar

The sixteenth word of verse (9:42) is divided into 3 morphological segments. An emphatic prefix, verb and subject pronoun. The prefixed particle lām is usually translated as "surely" or "indeed" and is used to add emphasis. The perfect verb (فعل ماض) is first person plural. The verb's triliteral root is khā rā jīm (خ ر ج). The suffix (نا) is an attached subject pronoun.

Sahih International: Had it been an easy gain and a moderate trip, the hypocrites would have followed you, but distant to them was the journey. And they will swear by Allah , "If we were able, we would have gone forth with you," destroying themselves [through false oaths], and Allah knows that indeed they are liars.
