Verse (9:42), Word 12 - Quranic Grammar

The twelfth word of verse (9:42) is divided into 4 morphological segments. A conjunction, future particle, verb and subject pronoun. The prefixed conjunction wa is usually translated as "and". The prefixed future particle sa is used in combination with the imperfect (present tense) verb to form the future tense. The imperfect verb (فعل مضارع) is third person masculine plural and is in the indicative mood (مرفوع). The verb's triliteral root is ḥā lām fā (ح ل ف). The suffix (الواو) is an attached subject pronoun.

Sahih International: Had it been an easy gain and a moderate trip, the hypocrites would have followed you, but distant to them was the journey. And they will swear by Allah , "If we were able, we would have gone forth with you," destroying themselves [through false oaths], and Allah knows that indeed they are liars.
