Verse (8:16), Word 7 - Quranic Grammar

The seventh word of verse (8:16) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A preposition and noun. The prefixed preposition lām is usually translated as "for". The indefinite noun is masculine and is in the genitive case (مجرور). The noun's triliteral root is qāf tā lām (ق ت ل). Together the segments form a preposition phrase known as jār wa majrūr (جار ومجرور).

Sahih International: And whoever turns his back to them on such a day, unless swerving [as a strategy] for war or joining [another] company, has certainly returned with anger [upon him] from Allah , and his refuge is Hell - and wretched is the destination.
