Verse (82:16), Word 1 - Quranic Grammar


The first word of verse (82:16) is divided into 2 morphological segments. A circumstantial particle and negative particle. The connective particle wa is usually translated as "while" and is used to indicate the circumstance of events. The negative particle acts like the verb laysa (ليس). This verb belongs to a special group of words known as kāna and her sisters (كان واخواتها).

And not
CIRC – prefixed circumstantial particle
NEG – negative particle
الواو حالية
نافية بمنزلة «ليس»

Verse (82:16)

The analysis above refers to the sixteenth verse of chapter 82 (sūrat l-infiṭār):

Sahih International: And never therefrom will they be absent.
